Dead Deer in Morgan County

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) suspects a large number of deer are affected by Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) disease in Morgan County.  IDNR staff has spoken with a number of individuals who have found deer dead in and around Lake DeTurk and has taken a number of suspected dead deer for sampling to confirm EHD in 2012. No further samples are needed at this time.  Concerned individuals may contact the IDNR with questions.  Deer that are found dead should be disposed of by burning or burying. EHD positive deer can have secondary bacterial infections that could be problematic, but the disease itself is of no concern for human health.  The first good frost typically brings an abrupt end to the outbreak of EHD as it kills the midges that cause the disease.
